Back in 2013 I had great employer health care coverage, and it was about that time my employer filed for bankruptcy. Right about that time, my son was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder.
The doctor decided on a treatment called Remicade, which is an IV treatment that he needed every other month, and that was $10,000 per treatment. There was no way financially we could afford that. So we made a decision that I would take a lesser income in order to qualify for the Oregon Health Plan.
I don’t regret it because the health of my child is of the utmost importance. But at the same time, I shouldn’t have to make that type of decision. Do I have a career or do I take care of my child and his health?
My best recommendation is to do a lot of research. Find advocates, either online or someone in a health providing network. But find an advocate that can help you navigate that sea of paperwork and bureaucracy because it is a nightmare.
